Sri Sarabeswarar Temple
Koyambedu, suburb of the city, has acquired name and fame as the place
housing Bus Terminus (CMBT) and wholesale and retail markets But many are not
aware that it has Puranic connections with two temples dedicated to Narayana and
Siva, situated close to each other. Arunagirinathar, in his Thiruppugazh, has
referred to the place as Kosai Nagar.
Lord Siva, known here as Kurungaleeswarar, was worshipped by Lava and Kusa.
The goddess, known as Dharmasamvardhini, is worshipped in a separate shrine and
a feature of the idol is that her left foot is projected forward. The presiding
deity in the Perumal Temple is known as Vaikundavasa Perumal. The Moolavar idol
was worshipped by Sage Valmiki, Lava and Kusa, according to legend. The temple
is famous for its beautiful images of Sita and Rama. While Rama is found wearing
a dress made from tree bark.
Even though there are two temples dedicated to Narayana and Shiva, currently
it's famous for Sri Sarabeswarar.
Lord Shiva took the form of Shrabha, a form that combines lion, human and
also a bird. With this Fierce form Lord Shiva engaged Narasimha to fight. Very
soon Narasimha realized that the Shrabha was nothing but Lord Shiva. He saluted
the Shrabha and shed away his wrath and became pleasant to be worshipped by
Lakshmi and Prahaladha.
