Chennai jeweller designed 50 lakhs jewellery for Lord ayyappa

A 11ft high golden chariot worth Rs 50 lakh, designed by Chennai jeweller and to be offered to a Lord Ayyappa temple here, will be unveiled on October 1. The chariot has been crafted in wood and plated with 200-kg of copper and 3 kg of 24 karat gold , owners of Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers V Raghunath and V Jitendra told media today.D Chandrasekhar of Thejus Decorative Platings, said an advanced technology called Electrophoretic had been used for electroplating work and this would protect the chariot against the vagaries of nature, The chariot has an expected life of 75 years, he said.The base of the chariot is unique with the legend of Lord Ayyappa engraved on it. The pedestal is shaped like a lotus in full bloom and has Goddess Lakshmi engraved on it. There is a couple of very intricately sculpted horses made to look like dragging the chariot.

Chikungunya: Karuna denied Jaya statements

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has described AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa's claim that over 200 people died of chikungunya disease in the state as a "bundle of lies." Writing in the DMK's official organ 'Murasoli', he said the list provided by her contained names of persons, who died even before the disease broke out and those who committed suicide.On her charge that he did not even bother to visit the houses of those who died of the disease to console their relatives, he said when nobody had died of the disease, where was the question of consoling the relatives of the victims.He denied DMDK leader and actor Vijaykanth's charge that the DMK was attempting to deprive the party of the 'murasu' (drum) symbol under which it contested the Assembly polls.

Masdras High Court directions on judicial officer

Setting aside the dismissal of a magistrate on charges of corruption, Madras High Court today said it would be difficult for a judicial officer to discharge his duty in a honest and independent manner, if anonymous complaints against him were entertained by the court.A division bench comprising V Dharma Rao and K Suguna made this observation while allowing an appeal filed by judicial magistrate Amaldoss, seeking to set aside an order of the court in September 20, 1999, dismissing him on charges of corruption and misconduct.The judges said, "if complaints against judicial officers are entertained in trifling matters, they would be under constant threat of complaints. No judicial officer will feel secure if the court entertains anonymous complaints against them".The judges said they were satisfied with the overwhelming materials submitted by the petitioner to prove the guilt wrong. The enquiry should not have held the charges against him as proved. It was also not proved that this was done with extraneous considerations, the judges added.

Tamil directors in Tollywood may come back to Tamil Nadu

Chennai civic polls: Police in high allert

Heavy security arrangements are being made to ensure incident free civic polls in the metropolis, Chennai City Police Commissioner Letika Saran, said today. She told newsmen here that the police was paying attention to the security arrangements for the polls scheduled for October 11.
The police was also planning for preventive custody of anti-social elements and trouble makers to ensure incident free polls. She said in a short two week span, special police team had solved 30 crimes leading to the arrest of a dozen persons and a total of nearly Rs 25 lakh worth of properties were recovered.

Jaya demands equal rights for Tamils

AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa asked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to clarify his stand on the LTTE, while expressing her firm opposition to the banned organisation. "The AIADMK is noting with concern the sufferings of Tamils in Sri Lanka. We are for a solution which will ensure equal rights and dignity for Tamils. At the same time, the AIADMK will not support a terrorist organisation like the LTTE. We have always opposed terrorist and extremist organisations." Asked about MDMK leader Vaiko's support for the LTTE, she said "he had not spoken in support of the LTTE in my presence." he denied that rocket shells and launchers were manufactured in Tamil Nadu during the AIADMK regime.

IT raids on AIADMK leaders

In a rare joint operation, officials of the Income Tax Department and Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption today raided the houses and business establishments of AIADMK leader and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and party's former minister Anitha Radhakrishnan.This is the first time that the Central and state government agencies are together raiding the business establishments, farms and estates," officials said.Raids were conducted at the house of Panneerselvam near Periyakulam, his estate at Kodaikanal, relatives' houses at Lakshmipuram and Mettupatti in Virudhunagar district and his bus service office.
