Free education would be extended to government aided colleges

Free education scheme for students of government colleges in Tamil Nadu, announced in the state budget last week, would be extended to government-aided colleges also, Finance Minister K Anbazhagan informed the Assembly.Replying to the discussion on the state budget, Anbazhagan said the government had considered the request of Congress member Peter Alphonse for extending free education to government-aided colleges too and decided to accept it.

Bandh effect: SR cancells some trains

Due to the state-wide bandh in Tamil Nadu from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow, Southern Railway has cancelled/ rescheduled some of the trains.All the passenger trains and suburban trains running in Tamil Nadu area will be cancelled between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.All the incoming trains, coming into Tamil Nadu area, will be brought ahead of 6 a.m. as far as possible. If it is not possible to bring them to the terminal, they shall be regulated at suitable stations by the divisions duly making arrangements for the passengers for catering, water, etc.

40 check posts at coastal belt would be erected with in one year

The newly sanctioned 40 check-posts and 12 marine police stations at coastal belt of Tamil Nadu would be erected within one year, K V S Murthy, ADGP (Law and Order), said here today.The government has recently sanctioned 40 check-posts along the coastal areas, apart from the existing 60 posts and once these were erected, the vigilance would be strong in the areas, he told media.The marine police stations, equipped with patrolling, including in shallow water, were expected to be ready within one year, Murthy said.

Signalling that it was ready to take on the DMK government in the Assembly, ally PMK sought total prohibition in Tamil Nadu, to the delight of Opposition AIADMK and much to the embarrassment of the DMK.
Though the PMK has been airing its views openly against the DMK government on several issues like prohibition, Cauvery and satellite towns in the recent past, this is the first time the party was raising such a conflicting issue against the government in the Assembly.
The DMK members, including Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, remained silent while seriously following the speech of the PMK member Velmurugan who made the demand which would hit the states coffers badly, if implemented. Meanwhile, the AIADMK members were amused at the governments embarrassment and started thumping the desks in enjoyment.

Accusing the Election Commission of manipulating delimitation of constituencies in its draft list, depriving voting rights to Dalits, Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT) sought reenumeration of their population across the country, particularly in Tamil Nadu, based on 2001 census.
In the draft, all the seven reserved parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu come in northern parts of the state, PT president Dr K Krishnasamy told the south, central and western parts have been meted out injustice and lacked proper geographical representation.

The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) directed Sun TV to provide its signals to direct-to-home (DTH) operator TataSky on a pick-and-choose basis.In an interim order, TDSAT also asked TataSky to pay 50 per cent of the rates wanted by Sun TV for its channels.Sun TV had demanded Rs 85 for all its 20 channels from TataSky. However, TataSky would be allowed to pick and choose channels on an a-la-carte basis and pay half the price of what Sun TV had submitted before sector regulator TRAI.

100 new buses for TN on March 21

The government would introduce 100 low floor buses on March 21 with a view to helping aged people, Transport Minister K N Nehru said.The services would be inaugurated by Local Administration Minister M K Stalin. Karunanidhi, in a change of stand, on indicated that his government was in favour of the joint patrolling of the Palk Strait by the Indian and Sri Lankan navies in order to protect the fishermen of Tamil Nadu. The DMK had earlier expressed reservations about the proposal made by the Sri Lankan government. The joint patrolling proposal is yet to be endorsed by the Indian government.The Sri Lankan Navy has come under severe criticism from various political parties and organisations in Tamil Nadu for allegedly firing on fishermen at sea. It is now hoped that joint patrols would help prevent such untoward incidents. The proposal had first been made by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse during his visit to New Delhi in November last year, but it did not evoke a positive response from India, possibly because it did not wish to involve its Navy in inevitable confrontations involving the Tamil militants suspected to be operating their vessels in the region.

Train service between Chennai and Tiruchirappalli via Mayiladuthurai would commence by January next year after completion of gauge conversion works, Union Minister of State for Railways R Velu has said.
Addressing a press conference at Kollidam, near here, yesterday after inspecting the gauge conversion work between Mayiladuthurai and Kollidam, Velu said the work had been undertaken at a cost of Rs 270 crore and was expected to be completed by December.

Aircel, the number one mobile service provider in Tamil Nadu and now part of Maxis Communications Berhad, Malaysia, announced its 3G Readiness having successfully tested the technology in Chennai. The 3G trials were conducted in association with ZTE Corporation.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had allowed existing mobile service providers to conduct 3G trials in select cities within the stipulated timeframe of March 31, 2007 and Aircel was given the permission to conduct these trials in Chennai, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, Shillong and Guwahati.
