Vijayakant announced candidates for 140 constituencies

Tamil film actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder Vijaykanth, is to make his electoral debut from Vriddhachalam constituency in Cuddalore district.Releasing the first list of 140 candidates for the polls to the 234-member House, Vijaykanth said that there was no change in the DMDK's stand that it would not align with any other party. The list contained names of 18 women. The second and final list for the remaining 94 constituencies would be announced on April 4th.

Night herons...
Known as 'Vakka' in Tamil.The birds perch atop trees in groups during the day and search for food after dusk. They feed mainly on fish, frogs and small insects found close to water bodies.
Black-crowned night herons appear to have descended on the Chennai in a big way. Night herons nests could be seen at Ayyappan Koil junction on Alagirisamy Salai, and on the trees in the Corporation School campus and along a few other roads in the area.Night herons have also been sighted in Adyar, Alwarpet and Kellys. There were 15 nests on one particular tree and over 75 on the avenue trees in K.K. Nagar.Availability of feed in plenty and dense green cover could be the reason for the nesting in K.K.Nagar, he said. Though there are no reports of poachers scouting the area, the wildlife authorities said a Ficus tree in the 8the sector with several nests was axed about two months ago.. However, the young ones were rescued by wildlife enthusiasts and safely housed at the Children's Park.

Question paper leak case: CBI started searches

Central Bureau of Investigation conducted searches on 35 premises in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry in connection with the alleged question paper leak in the entrance examination for admission to MD/MS and post-graduate diploma courses.CBI- (Anti-Corruption Branch) DIG N.R.K. Reddy told media that 36,945 candidates appeared for the examination at 61 centres on January 8 conducted by All India Institute of medical Sciences.Of the total, 4,188 candidates wrote the examination in 10 centres in Chennai, 421 were selected. What raised suspicion was that an unusual number, compared to the figures of the past few years, got qualified this year. Also, a common pattern in which some candidates answered the questions was noticed. Based on a complaint from the Union Health Ministry, the investigating agency registered a case against 22 doctors.

New motocross track launched

The Madras Motor Sports Club launched its new motocross track. The track was inaugurated by Venu Srinivasan, managing director, TVS Motor Co Ltd, who also happens to be a great fan of motocross racing. Chennai can now train riders for Motocross competitions, Venu said shortly after flagging off a trest drive by young riders.The inauguration was followed by demonstrative motocross races on Indian bikes and imported Group A bikes.Motocross is perhaps the most spectacular of bike races. The course comprises jumps, made of soft, natural material, so that the impact on failing is minimal.

DMK poll promise: Color TV set for every family

The DMK made a series of promises to woo voters in the Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu.To match the AIADMK government's free bicycle scheme for students, the DMK, in its manifesto released by party president M Karunanidhi here, promised to provide colour television sets to every family in the state. Likewise, it promised to give Rs.1,000 per month for six months to pregnant women to match the cash dole of Rs.1,000 in rural areas and Rs.2,000 in Chennai to the flood-hit people. Good quality rice at Rs 2 per kg and free power to weavers are the other promises made by the DMK.

Efforts are going on for the formation of a third front. According to sources AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa has shown an inclination. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, Udhay Pratap Singh, said to press that "Jayalalithaa has shown an inclination. She has accepted the need for a third front and her party is likely to be one of the constituents,". He and SP's Maharashtra unit president Abu Asim Azmi said already the Telugu Desam Party led by N Chandrababu Naidu and the Left parties were supporting the move for the formation of a third front.

Tamil film actor-turned politician Vijaykwant said in a public meeting that his main election plank was to eradicate corruption and provide good governance. He started poll campaign in southern districts of Tamilnadu.Rejecting the reported offer of 30 seats to his party by the AIADMK, Vijaykanth said his party, Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK), wanted a share in power.
"I am not for an alliance with any party. I will go it alone. What I want is a share in governance." he said. Vijaykanth said
He alleged that the DMK, when in power in the past, had not found a solution to the Cauvery river water dispute or the Periyar dam issue.

Tsunami schemes to continue

Alleging that rehabilitation and relief schemes for Tsunami affected persons in a part of Chennai had stopped, following announcement of the state assembly polls, 'Saidapet Podhu Nala Sangam' moved the Madras High Court for a direction to the authorities concerned to continue implementation of such schemes.
The Sangam alleged that subordinates of the Chief Election Commission and state government were under the misconception that implementation of such schemes, under progess, should be stopped due to the announcement of the election schedule. The action was illegal, arbitrary and violative of Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution.
Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Prabha Sridevan directed issue of notice to the CEC and state government. The Election Commission had made it clear that works already started may be continued and that only fresh schemes should not be taken up till completion of the polling on May 8th.

World Federation of Tamil Youth is planning to celebrate, the Tamil New Year Day, as Selvi J Jayalalithaa Day. WFTY leaders said "We will celebrate April 14th as Selvi J Jayalithaa Day in 15 countries. WFTY had suggested Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's name to the Norwegian Nobel Institute for the award of Nobel Peace Prize 2006.The federation has "nominated" Jayalalithaa's name from India, Sharjah and the US, for her "dedicated efforts in ushering in peace and progress in the state during the last five years, its president Dr Vijay G Prabhakar told reporters at Chennai. Dr Giri Rengasami, advisor to the Indian chapter, said Jayalalithaa was the first Chief Minister of India whose "nomination" had been sent to the institute.

Madras High Court moved against unauthorised hoardings

A Chennai advocate K Kanagaraj filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the authorities concerned to remove all "unauthorised" hoardings put up by political parties in Chennai. In his petition,he contended that though there were stipulations and specifications laid down for erecting hoardings, none of the political parties seemed to follow these. Besides, the Chennai corporation is also not taking any steps either to regulate such hoardings as per the rules. Since the ruling AIADMK had erected hoardings, the officials concerned were hesitant to impose any fees or forbid the party from erecting them. He said the hoardings caused great inconvenience to the general public. They were a hindrance to the smooth flow of traffic besides resulting in a loss of revenue to the state exchequer. At present, over 10,000 hoardings, were erected in and around the city.

DMK president M Karunanidhi preparing for coalition govenment in May 8 Tamilnadu Assembly elections. M Karunanidhi has taken the biggest risk in his 60-year political career and has apparently shown that he is not averse to a coalition government. Knowing pretty well that polls are going to be a "life or death struggle", as the DMK-led DPA has to combat with a formidable AIADMK-MDMK-DPI combine, Karunanidhi has generously offered 105 seats to allies Congress, PMK, CPM, CPI and Indian Union Muslim League. Though the DMK had been initially maintaining that there is no question of a coalition government in the state.

K.P.Anbalagan and others hurt in road mishap

Tamil Nadu Minister K P Anbalagan suffered minor injuries when the van in which he was travelling hit a stationary lorry, about 100 km from Bangalore, police here. Dharmapuri municipal chairman R Vetrivel and some of his family members, who were accompanying the Minister, were also injured in the mishap and have been admitted to a hospital. They were returning after performing poojas at the Mookambikai temple in Udupi district in Karnataka, the police added.

TN Elections: CPI will contest in 10 seats

The Communist Party of India clinched a poll accord with the Dravida Munnetra kazagam (DMK) under which it would contest 10 seats in the coming Assembly polls to the Tamil Nadu.An agreement to this effect was today inked by the state CPI secretary D Pandiyan and DMK President M Karunanidhi.CPI is the first party in the six-party Democratic Progressive Alliance to reach an accord with the DMK.
In the last assembly polls, CPI contested eight seats and won five seats in alliance with the AIADMK. In the Lok Sabha polls, the party won the Tenkasi (SC) and Coimbatore seats alloted to it by the DMK.

Ramesh death case: Court orders to pay compensation

The Madras High court ordered the TN government to pay Rs.3 lakh as compensation to one Kabali, in connection with the death of his son Ramesh, after being in police custody in a traffic violation case.
Allowing Kabali's petition, a Division bench, directed the government to pay compensation in addition to the Rs one lakh already paid by it. In his petition, Kabali contended that his son Ramesh was picked by the Mylapore police allegedly for traffic violation on April 12, 1997 near the city's Luz junction area. His son 's body was found in the nearby Buckingham canal the next day. However, following media reports and local people's protest, the Tamil Nadu government announced Rs one lakh as compensation.

Heavy rains that lashed Coimbatore, gave the public much needed respite from the sweltering heat, being experienced for the last couple of days. Rains lashed Coimbatore around 11 AM today, catching the public, particularly two-wheeler riders, unawares.

After several hundred years TTD conducting celestial wedding of Lord Venkateswara out side the hill shrine in Tirupati on March 5, Sunday at Chennai Tirumala Temple. Organisers are expecting nearly two lakh devotees to witness the wedding of Venkateswara.The city will be the first metro to witness the ‘kalyana utsavam’. This will be the fourth occasion, after several hundred years, when it is being held outside the hill shrine in Andhra Pradesh, TTD joint executive officer K Venkatadharma Reddy said in Chennai.He said the TTD Trust Board had decided to conduct the ‘kalyana utsavam’ outside Tirumala to enable more number of devotees, who would otherwise have to come to the hills, to witness the spectacle.

TN Politics: Serious action against Congress rebels

The party has taken note of the actions of senior leader Bhoovaraghavan, a close associate of Ramamurthee, party state unit president M Krishnasamy said at Chennai.
Action would be taken against all Congress rebels in Tamil Nadu who supported expelled leader Tindivanam Ramamurthee, Initially, explanation would be sought on their anti-party statements and if the same was not satisfactory, action would be taken, he told.
Asked whether the Congress would press for a coalition government in Tamil Nadu after assembly elections, he said the party high command would decide it. The immediate task of the party was to finalise seat sharing.
