Government announced Periyar award for Sathyaraj

The Tamil Nadu government today announced the Periyar award for film actor Sathyaraj, who is donning the role of social reformer Periyar E V Ramasamy in a film portraying the leader's life.Sathyaraj was doing the role in the film Periyar without receiving any payment, an official press release here said. The government also announced Ambedkar award for DPI leader Thol Thirumavalavan. Arignar Anna award, named after former Chief Minister and DMK founder C N Annadurai would be given to former minister Rm Veerappan.

Government file a defamation suit against Vaiko

Facing charges of splitting the MDMK, the Tamil Nadu government today filed a defamation suit against MDMK leader Vaiko for certain remarks which allegedly caused irreparable damage to the reputation of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi besides mental agony to him.In a complaint filed on behalf of the government, City Public Prosecutor Shah Jahan contended that in a report published in an English daily from here, Vaiko had accused the Chief Minister of hatching a plan to let lose hooliganism in connivance with the state police to prevent MDMK cadres from attending a party meeting.

MDMK dissident leaders L Ganesan and Gingee N Ramachandran, who are now demanding snapping ties with AIADMK, had insisted on alliance with the same party during the 2006 Assembly elections, party supremo Vaiko said today.In a statement here, Vaiko said it was dissident leader Ganesan who insisted on an alliance with the AIADMK during a meeting of party functionaries before the 2006 elections. City-based Baba Arts Films, which produced hits like Ishq and Pyar To Hona Hi Tha, now plans to make Tamil and Telugu movies and looks to raise Rs 100 crore through foreign currency convertibles and preferential shares. We plan to raise Rs 100 crore (Rs 60 crore via FCCB and Rs 40 crore via preferential share) post-March. Also, we plan to enter the southern market of Tamil Nadu with our maiden venture, Baba Arts managing director Gordhan Tanwani said.
The company shares are trading at Rs 25-30 currently at a face value of Rs 4 with an expected PE ratio to be 12 post-March and earning Rs 3.5 crore profit this fiscal, he said.

IG's daughter killed in car bus collission at Madurai

Two persons, including the daughter of West Bengal Inspector General of Police, were killed on the spot and two sustained injuries when their vehicle collided with a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus at Shivara kottai, about 25 km from here today.Police said Sadan Chandra Mondal, West Bengal IG, and his family members were coming to Madurai from Kanyakumari in the car when it collided with the bus.The driver of the car was also killed in the accident.

Government fixes movie ticket rates

The Tamil Nadu government today fixed the minimum and maximum rates for cinema tickets for air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned theatres in the state.An official release here said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced a minimum ticket rate of Rs 10 and maximum of Rs 50 for A/c theatres and Rs 7 and Rs 30 for non-A/c theatres in the corporation areas.In the municipal areas, A/c theatres would charge a minimum of Rs 5 and maximum of Rs 40, and non-A/c theatres a minimum of Rs 4 and maximum of Rs 30.

Madras High Court reserves orders BCCI issue

The Madras High Court today reserved orders on a petition filed by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) seeking a stay on the BCCI meeting to be convened at Jaipur on December 16.After hearing the CAB and BCCI counsels, Justice Chithra Venkataraman reserved the orders on the petition.Senior counsel A L Somaiyaji, appearing for CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya, contended that Rules 27, 38(IV) and 41 of the Rules and Regulations of BCCI were ultra vires of the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act (TNSRA) and sought a direction restraining the BCCI from permitting anyone else except its members from voting at special general meetings.

Mullaperiyar dam: Talks on Dec 18

Tamil Nadu and Kerala will hold ministerial-level talks on December 18 in a bid to narrow down differences over the Mullaperiyar dam issue, the second high-level meeting between the states within a month.PWD Minister of Tamil Nadu Durai Murugan and Water Resources Minister of Kerala N K Premachandran will meet here for talks convened by Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz, official sources said yesterday. The Chief Ministers of both the states had met here last month in a major exercise to find an amicable solution to the decades-old row over raising the water level in the 111-year-old dam.

Free gas stoves and connections from Jan14

Tamil Nadu government will launch free gas connection scheme from January 14 by distributing connections and stoves to 30,000 beneficiaries. This was decided at a meeting of Ministers and officials headed by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today.
Three lakh gas connections would be provided before March 2007 and the government was aiming at providing gas connections to all the families in the state which do not have one, within the next four years, press release said.

Vishal definitely has good screen presence and does the brooding role well. But his diction is a big problem and his trouble with the zha sound makes some of his long lines almost embarrassing. Mamta looks beautiful though like most heroines, she doesnot fit in in the village. Raghuvaran is his usual self.
Karu. Palaniappans sincerity is not in doubt. His intentions are noble and his attempt to convey positive messages is laudable. But good intentions alone do not make a good film. Popularizing folk songs sounds like a good idea but there not many ways to present it interestingly and it shows. There are too many folk songs (one would become a chain smoker if one walked out for every song in the first half!) and though the first couple sound good, they soon overstay their welcome. Getting real villagers and singersto participate is a good idea but with no hint of a story, the film meanders, seeming more like a documentary during these portions. The intermission point occurs less than an hour into the movie but it seems much longer.

It is a vendetta-based plot and there is not much chance of getting bored here. What with the fights, the songs and dances, and the action following in quick succession. Madhavan gets to play his first dual role. There is not much need for the actor to demarcate it, and he doesnot take any strain either. He looks trim and good here, breezes through his role comfortably and comes out well in the lighter scenes.

Ahead of the Assembly polls in four states including Uttar Pradesh, AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa today predicted that a political realignment was on the cards both at the national level as also in Tamil Nadu. A known detractor of Sonia Gandhi, she sought to hit out at the Congress president for her skipping the function to unveil the statue of AIADMK founder and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran in Parliament House today. A day after her dinner meeting with UP Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and SP leader Amar Singh, Jayalalithaa said, Political realignment will take place in the near future both at the national level and at the state level. The project was launched with the ceremonial unveiling of an architectural model of the proposed plant by Karunanidhi in the presence of Union Minister for Communications and IT, Dayanidhi Maran, Steve Felice, President - Dell, Asia Pacific and Japan, Kip Thompson, Vice President - Worldwide Facilities, Dell, Simon Wong, Vice President - Dell Asia Operations and Rajan Anandan, Vice President & GM - Dell India.The Chief Minister welcomed Dell initiative in setting up a manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, and said this showed that Tamil Nadu was an attractive destination for foreign investment including in the manufacturing sector. These units would generate both direct and indirect employment, he pointed out.Steve Fellice said with an initial investment of US $30 million spread over five years, setting up of Dell plant in India marks a new beginning, not just in computers manufacture, but in manufacturing as it will bring in the globally renowned manufacturing and supply chain capabilities of Dell, Steve Fellice said. The India plant wil1 be part of Dells global network of eight manufacturing facilities. It wil1 be the companys third facility in Asia-Pacific after Penang, Malaysia, and Xiamen, China.

Centre to open Tamil language institute

The Centre has agreed to take up during the Eleventh Plan the setting up of an exclusive Central Institute for classical Tamil language in Chennai, a suggestion made by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh in a letter to Karunanidhi, a copy of which was released to the media here, said he would direct the ministry to include a suitable proposal for establishment of the institute.

Nayantara is back where she began

Nayantara, the leading south Indian actor who made it big from her humble start in Malayalam is back where she began. Her new film Lakshmi was released all over the state with 35 prints. The movie is actually a remake of her Telugu film Lakshmi. The film was directed by VV Vinayak, who also wrote the screenplay of the film. This film made her hugely popular in Telugu. Nayantara is also part of the introduction song featuring Rajnikanth in his forthcoming film Sivaji, which is being directed by Shankar.

Asin is now on the top slot in Tamil industry and receiving tough competition from Trisha. She is also a celebrity now by endorsing Big FM and her hoardings are seen on city roads.
Asin says that there would be great advantage for artistes if they watch their films sitting in the middle of audiences.
I watch the premiere shows of my films with film circles. But they applaud only the positive things in my performance. The real feedback comes from audiences who sound whistles or signs of disgust. Some audiences even make comments if they do not like certain dialogue or expression. So, that would be a right lesson for anyone. I learnt a lot by watching the films with audiences, shared Asin.

Tamil Nadu Assembly winter session to be stormy
