Tamilnadu News Archive: November 2005Vestas expands in ChennaiWednesday, November 30, 2005 | AYVestas RRB India Ltd on Monday said it plans to pump in Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) over the next two years to expand its manufacturing facilities in a bid to become the largest wind energy company in the country with a turnover of Rs 4,000 crore (Rs 40 billion) by 2008. The company's turnover is expected to rise to Rs 2,000 crore (Rs 20 billion) in 2006-07 and to Rs 4,000 crore a year later, making it the largest Indian wind energy company. The Chennai-based firm currently is the second largest company in terms of turnover after the recently-listed Suzlon Energy and is registering nearly 100 per cent annual growth over the past 2-3 years just like its Pune-based competitor. To meet the rapidly growing demand, Vestas is expanding its manufacturing base in Chennai at an investment of Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion). In the first phase, the company would invest Rs 35 crore (Rs 350 million) to set up a greenfield unit for making turbine blades. Highest rainfall recorded in the cityTuesday, November 29, 2005 | AYChennai city recorded the highest rainfall among all districts in Tamil Nadu this season, even as its four reservoirs were brimming with water. Since the onset of monsoon on October 12, the city had received 142 cm rainfall till date under the current North-East monsoon. This was second only to 157 cm recorded in 1997. The NE monsoon, which lasts from October to November, normally provides 60 per cent of rainfall to coastal districts and 40 to 50 per cent to interior districts of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile the city's four major reservoirs registered good storage levels. As of today Chembarambakkam recorded a storage of 2,908 mcft against its full storage level of 3,645 mcft. At Red Hills it was 3,104 mcft (3,300 mcft), Poondi 2,823 mcft (3,231 mcft) and Cholavaram 794 mcft (881 mcft). Air Deccan has new flights charted upMonday, November 28, 2005 | AYAir Deccan has announced the launch of direct daily flights from Chennai to Pune and Chennai to Thiruvananthapuram from February 1 next year. It will also launch direct daily flights from Ahmedabad to Hyderabad from that date. A 180-seater Airbus A320 will be deployed on the routes. A total of 100 seats will be priced below Rs 2,000. A total of 50,000 tickets priced between Re one (plus taxes) and Rs 999 (plus taxes) will be released for travel. Currently I am acting in Valavaan with Simbu,” says Sandhya. 2 buses plunge into riversSaturday, November 26, 2005 | AYAt least 100 passengers were feared drowned when two buses, in separate incidents, plunged into swollen rivers following flash floods in Tamil Nadu. A government bus carrying 63 passengers from Tiruchy to Rameswaram fell into Sirugani river near Tiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram district, 470 km from here in the afternoon. The driver, who was among the 30 rescued by villagers, lost control of the vehicle when he tried to cross a flooded bridge. The bus was swept away and lodged in a deep trench on the river bed. The authorities said the death toll might go up as several passengers had boarded the bus just before the mishap. The search, they said, was expected to resume tomorrow morning by which time some bodies might be washed away. In the second incident two hours later, a private bus proceeding from Pattukottai to Arantangi was swept away by a jungle stream at Kondikkulam near Pattukottai, about 300 km south of Chennai. Police said the 40-seat bus was carrying more than 80 passengers. TN has been experiencing heavy rains in the last few days due to a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, expected to continue for another 24 hours. The worst-hit districts are Cuddalore, Tiruchirapalli, Karur and Dindigul, where more than 2 lakh people have been displaced in the last couple of days. The magistrate dismissed Kushboo's plea that she was unable to appear in court due to the inclement weather, bad roads and prior engagements. TN safe from Tsunami for 50 yearsTuesday, November 8, 2005 | AYA new study says that there is no likelihood of a tsunami on the Tamil Nadu coastline in another 50 years unless the Sumatra region is hit by an earthquake of 9 on the Richter scale. The study said a tsunami will not hit coastal areas from Poompuhar to Nagore in Tamil Nadu unless there is an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale in the Sumatra area. An amendment to the Board's affiliation laws, to come into effect from the next academic year, is aimed at ending discrimination against the girl child's educational progress. But managements of privately-run CBSE schools are worried. The authorities fear that such a step will strike at the roots of viability. Even if a few dozen girls in classes VI to XII are given free education, the school will face a big fee loss, say principals and management representatives. We see many nuclear families stopping with a single child. So, a school may have to provide free education to a few hundred single girl children. To make up the loss, schools will either reduce teacher pay or increase fee for boys, which is discrimination against boys. In addition, Metso Paper will supply a new bleaching process for the company's bagasse fiberline. The total value of the orders is approximately 25 MEUR. The new systems are scheduled to be started up at the beginning of 2007. Both of the deliveries include main process machinery, pumps, field instruments and engineering. The new line is designed to produce 300 bdt/d fully bleached pulp of mainly eucalyptus as the raw material. Tamil Nadu is the largest bagasse-based plant in the world and the mill has India's largest production capacity at a single location. Six killed in stampedeSunday, November 6, 2005 | AYSix women were killed and 10 injured in a stampede at a relief distribution centre in Vysarpadi this morning. The incident occurred when nearly 300 people gathered at around 4:30 am in front of the centre, where the Tamil Nadu government's doles of Rs 2,000, 10 kgs of rice, dhotis and sarees were to be distributed to the flood affected persons. As soon as the centre opened for distribution, there was jostling and a rush to get the doles and in the ensuing stampede six were killed and 10 injured. Jayalalithaa gives a gift to chennai peopleTuesday, November 1, 2005 | AYAs a special gift" for Chennai's residents on the eve of Deepavali, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced resumption of daily piped water supply. Until now, the supply was on alternate days. The quantum of daily supply is likely to be 350 to 400 million litres a day (MLD). Noting that "substantial further inflows" through the Kandaleru-Poondi Canal would continue for several months in view of the good storage position in Andhra Pradesh, the Chief Minister said the well-field system in the Araniar-Kosasthalaiyar Basin had also been recharged in the recent rain. The Mettur reservoir was full and would ensure that the New Veeranam Project could continue to deliver 180 MLD through the summer.
