Vestas expands in Chennai

Vestas RRB India Ltd on Monday said it plans to pump in Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) over the next two years to expand its manufacturing facilities in a bid to become the largest wind energy company in the country with a turnover of Rs 4,000 crore (Rs 40 billion) by 2008. The company's turnover is expected to rise to Rs 2,000 crore (Rs 20 billion) in 2006-07 and to Rs 4,000 crore a year later, making it the largest Indian wind energy company. The Chennai-based firm currently is the second largest company in terms of turnover after the recently-listed Suzlon Energy and is registering nearly 100 per cent annual growth over the past 2-3 years just like its Pune-based competitor. To meet the rapidly growing demand, Vestas is expanding its manufacturing base in Chennai at an investment of Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion). In the first phase, the company would invest Rs 35 crore (Rs 350 million) to set up a greenfield unit for making turbine blades.

Highest rainfall recorded in the city

Chennai city recorded the highest rainfall among all districts in Tamil Nadu this season, even as its four reservoirs were brimming with water. Since the onset of monsoon on October 12, the city had received 142 cm rainfall till date under the current North-East monsoon. This was second only to 157 cm recorded in 1997. The NE monsoon, which lasts from October to November, normally provides 60 per cent of rainfall to coastal districts and 40 to 50 per cent to interior districts of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile the city's four major reservoirs registered good storage levels. As of today Chembarambakkam recorded a storage of 2,908 mcft against its full storage level of 3,645 mcft. At Red Hills it was 3,104 mcft (3,300 mcft), Poondi 2,823 mcft (3,231 mcft) and Cholavaram 794 mcft (881 mcft).

Air Deccan has new flights charted up

Air Deccan has announced the launch of direct daily flights from Chennai to Pune and Chennai to Thiruvananthapuram from February 1 next year. It will also launch direct daily flights from Ahmedabad to Hyderabad from that date. A 180-seater Airbus A320 will be deployed on the routes. A total of 100 seats will be priced below Rs 2,000. A total of 50,000 tickets priced between Re one (plus taxes) and Rs 999 (plus taxes) will be released for travel.

2 buses plunge into rivers

At least 100 passengers were feared drowned when two buses, in separate incidents, plunged into swollen rivers following flash floods in Tamil Nadu. A government bus carrying 63 passengers from Tiruchy to Rameswaram fell into Sirugani river near Tiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram district, 470 km from here in the afternoon. The driver, who was among the 30 rescued by villagers, lost control of the vehicle when he tried to cross a flooded bridge. The bus was swept away and lodged in a deep trench on the river bed. The authorities said the death toll might go up as several passengers had boarded the bus just before the mishap. The search, they said, was expected to resume tomorrow morning by which time some bodies might be washed away. In the second incident two hours later, a private bus proceeding from Pattukottai to Arantangi was swept away by a jungle stream at Kondikkulam near Pattukottai, about 300 km south of Chennai. Police said the 40-seat bus was carrying more than 80 passengers. TN has been experiencing heavy rains in the last few days due to a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, expected to continue for another 24 hours. The worst-hit districts are Cuddalore, Tiruchirapalli, Karur and Dindigul, where more than 2 lakh people have been displaced in the last couple of days.

CMC gets a new project

Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, has been given Rs.300 million, to undertake research on stem cells. They will pioneer experiments to see if stem cells can be developed into heart muscles, nerve cells and if primary cells can grow into specialised cells. It will have far-reaching implications in the lives of people and it is a tribute to the staff of CMC and its vision to provide as much relief, particularly to the poor and needy. CMC will work with five hospitals in the country - at Manali in Himachal Pradesh, Raxaul in Bihar, Jalna in Maharashtra, Tezpur in Assam and Gadhag in Karnataka - to provide web-based services to help the poor. The medical college and hospital has also tied up with the Indian Space Research Organisation for a telemedicine project.

A parcel containing a grenade was found in the cargo area of Chennai airport today. According to initial reports, the parcel containing the grenade came from London. Personnel from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security opened the suspicious looking parcel and found the hand grenade inside. There are no reports of any damage and investigations into the matter are on. Sources said that the grenade was powerful enough to blow up the entire cargo complex of the airport.

Rs 10 crore relief for rain victims

Tamil Nadu Government has allotted Rs ten crore for relief and rehabilitation measures to the rain-affected in Kancheepuram district. Collector Mr Venkatesan said following torrential downpour, the district would not be facing any drinking water problem for another two years. He said Tamil Nadu Minister P Valarmathi had distributed relief measures to the flood victims. He said rehabilitation measures worth Rs 2,2,80,000 were provided by various voluntary agencies so far.

Avalon Technologies, a leading electronics manufacturing services provider, today launched its fourth manufacturing facility at Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), in Chennai. Launching a systems integration plant at the facility, Development Commissioner for MEPZ and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) B Vijayan said the exports from the MEPZ in the last fiscal was to the tune of Rs1,400 crore. By decade end, exports from here were expected to touch USD one billion. An ambitious modernisation plan, which will commence later this month, had been drawn up for the zone with Rs 65 crore being earmarked for the purpose for the current financial year. Between 40 to 50 acres of land in the zone, earlier tied up in litigations, coming under the control of the authorities, fresh investments between Rs 800 to Rs 1000 crore were expected to be pumped into the zone largely by the engineering, IT and garments sectors.

Incessant rains and consequent water logging in Chennai are turning into a serious health hazard for people living in low-lying areas. Seventy-three people, including 40 children, have tested positive for cholera over the last fortnight, and the predictions of more rains have prompted the Union Health Ministry to offer help for the region. There have also been reports of the sewage water entering houses and seeping into sumps. The Chennai Metro Water authorities have now urged residents to be more cautious about the water they drink. The authorities will now have to be more alert about the problem, and prevent it from becoming a major health epidemic.

An Indian Institute of Technology is set to enter industrial Research and Development arena with IIT, Madras, today unveiling its plans to establish a research park, a non-profit firm, here. The proposed "IIT Madras Research Park" had already received sanction from the Union Human Resources Development Ministry and would be completed by December 2006. A blue print for the proposed park was getting ready and the new firm would create space for students and faculties in the R & D area. Tamil Nadu Government had allotted 6.89 acres near the Tidel Park close to the IIT. Space in the proposed research park could be leased to companies in the IT, telecom, biotechnology and manufacturing sector. An underground passage would be built to connect the proposed park with the IIT.

Kushboo gets an arrest warrant

Magistrate in Chennai has issued an arrest warrant against Tamil actress Kushboo for not appearing in court in connection with a defamation case. The magistrate dismissed Kushboo's plea that she was unable to appear in court due to the inclement weather, bad roads and prior engagements. The defamation case was filed by the PMK and Tamil groups, after Kushboo gave a magazine interview saying there was nothing wrong with premarital sex, as long as the right precautions were taken. She also said no educated man today would expect his wife to be a virgin. Just a couple of days back, the actress had received a Madras High Court order dispensing with her appearance in certain lower courts for similar defamation cases.

The joint managing director of 'The Hindu', N Murali, has been elected President of The Music Academy, Chennai, in the annual elections held here yesterday, defeating his nearest rival Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti in a high-profile election. Murali secured 480 votes, trouncing Kuppuswami who could bag only 230 votes, despite releasing advertisements in several media publications. The election was held on the basis of the permission granted by the Madras High Court, where matters were pending in a case relating to the administration of the Academy during the presidentship of T T Vasu.

A new study says that there is no likelihood of a tsunami on the Tamil Nadu coastline in another 50 years unless the Sumatra region is hit by an earthquake of 9 on the Richter scale. The study said a tsunami will not hit coastal areas from Poompuhar to Nagore in Tamil Nadu unless there is an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale in the Sumatra area. Researchers said this after a joint study by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) in Thanjavur, the Tamil University, the Central Mining Research Institute and the National Institute of Oceanography among others. Private CBSE schools worried of their viability

The Central Board of Secondary Education has directed its affiliated schools to provide free education to all girl students who are "single child" in their family. An amendment to the Board's affiliation laws, to come into effect from the next academic year, is aimed at ending discrimination against the girl child's educational progress. But managements of privately-run CBSE schools are worried. The authorities fear that such a step will strike at the roots of viability. Even if a few dozen girls in classes VI to XII are given free education, the school will face a big fee loss, say principals and management representatives. We see many nuclear families stopping with a single child. So, a school may have to provide free education to a few hundred single girl children. To make up the loss, schools will either reduce teacher pay or increase fee for boys, which is discrimination against boys.

Metso Paper will supply a new hardwood fiberline to the Indian pulp and paper producer Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd. In addition, Metso Paper will supply a new bleaching process for the company's bagasse fiberline. The total value of the orders is approximately 25 MEUR. The new systems are scheduled to be started up at the beginning of 2007. Both of the deliveries include main process machinery, pumps, field instruments and engineering. The new line is designed
to produce 300 bdt/d fully bleached pulp of mainly eucalyptus as the raw material. Tamil Nadu is the largest bagasse-based plant in
the world and the mill has India's largest production capacity at a

2nd film fest of Tamil Nadu

International Tamil Film Academy and Seventh Channel are hosting the second Film Festival of Tamil Nadu (2005) in Chennai. The five-day fest, to be held between November 9 and November 13, and built around the theme of universal love will showcase 20 films from European countries besides China, Japan and UK. Director Bharatiraja will inaugurate the festival and actor Khushboo will participate in the festival. The films will be screened at Satyam multiplex and South Indian Film Chamber Auditorium. Six killed in stampede

Six women were killed and 10 injured in a stampede at a relief distribution centre in Vysarpadi this morning. The incident occurred when nearly 300 people gathered at around 4:30 am in front of the centre, where the Tamil Nadu government's doles of Rs 2,000, 10 kgs of rice, dhotis and sarees were to be distributed to the flood affected persons. As soon as the centre opened for distribution, there was jostling and a rush to get the doles and in the ensuing stampede six were killed and 10 injured.

Chennai will soon see a biodiversity institute

A modern biodiversity institute, will be set up in chennai which will be equipped with a documentation centre, library, a genetic resources conservation centre and microbial culture collection and maintenance centre, among other facilities. The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has sanctioned a grant of Rs.220 million for the above purpose. Only nine states - Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and West Bengal - have notified the formation of State Biodiversity Boards (SBBs), for which a one-time grant of Rs.1 million has been given.

Overnight, they decide to become honest. They buy an old lorry as their means of livelihood. Vikram has a tiff with Asin, who happens to be the only daughter of the local zamindar, become the local version of Robin Hood. Asin is a girl with a heart of gold, out to help the villagers, and she admires Vikram for his actions. It is a light comedy, a remake of the Malayalam hit Thommanum Makkalum. Music is by Vidyasagar, editing by V.T. Vijayan and Art by M. Prabhakar.

Jayalalithaa gives a gift to chennai people

As a special gift" for Chennai's residents on the eve of Deepavali, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced resumption of daily piped water supply. Until now, the supply was on alternate days. The quantum of daily supply is likely to be 350 to 400 million litres a day (MLD). Noting that "substantial further inflows" through the Kandaleru-Poondi Canal would continue for several months in view of the good storage position in Andhra Pradesh, the Chief Minister said the well-field system in the Araniar-Kosasthalaiyar Basin had also been recharged in the recent rain. The Mettur reservoir was full and would ensure that the New Veeranam Project could continue to deliver 180 MLD through the summer. Ms Jayalalithaa said the failure of the 2002 north-east monsoon forced the introduction of alternate day water supply in January 2003.
