Big Scam exposed in Madras University

Nayan: The Controller of Examinations at the Madras University will be replaced and criminal action taken against those involved in the marks scam.  On October 26, Chennai English News paper had reported that several students of top colleges in the city managed to get a 'pass' certificate even though they had failed in the April semester examinations.  The online version of the results indicated that the students had failed while the marks register printed by the computerised results processing section showed that they had passed.

Ambattur Industrial Estate lacks basic amenities

Nayan: Even decades after it came up, the Asia's largest estate Ambattur Industrial Estate lacks proper basic amenities right from roads, power supply, sewers, and parking space. The northeast monsoon rain that lashed Chennai last week inundated almost all the areas of the estate, forcing people to wade through waist high water mixed with sewage in certain areas. "Even a short spell of rain lasting up to half an hour is enough to flood the bus stand, and people are forced to walk through smelly filth. I cannot believe that even after 47 years since it came up, the estate lacks a proper drainage system," Babu Kalyan, a BPO employee said.

Rajiv Gandhi statue vandalised

CHENNAI: The city police on Friday arrested a man for his alleged role in vandalising a statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Kodungaiyur.
Ramamoorthi of Solaiyamman Koil Street, Sinnandi Madam, was arrested in the evening, but hid exact role was not clear at the time of going to press.
Tension prevailed in the area for some time in the morning after local residents noticed that the statue was vandalised.

Rajnikanth disappoints fans

Nayan: Disappointed by superstar Rajinikanth's statement that neither can anyone force nor stop his entry into politics, his fans in Madurai and Theni districts have come out with a strong remark against their star: Thalaivaa, neeyum kuzhambi, engalaiyum kuzhappaadhey. Posters carrying these lines have cropped up in the rural pockets of Madurai and Theni districts. His fans, who had earlier expected superstar's entry into politics to set right the problems faced by the state such as power crisis and thereby taunted the DMK government, have splashed graffiti venting out their frustration.

Elephant Day celebrated at Ooty

Nayan: Elephant Day was celebrated at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) near Ooty. The Elephant Day was organised in connection with the National Wildlife Week celebrations. Twelve domesticated elephants with sandal paste smeared on them, took part in the 'Jumbo Parade' with senior caparisoned elephants Inder, Subramani and Santosh leading. The parade was flagged off by P. A. Mani, chief conservator of forests.

RTI Act yet to catch up in TN

Nayan: Awareness about the Right To Information Act (RTI) was yet to catch up with people and the procedures remain cumbersome. Inordinate delays in getting the replies from the authorities make the whole exercise futile, allege activists of the Tamil Nadu Right to Information campaign, a non-formal organisation engaged in making the RTI more people friendly.

TNEB signs MoU with REC

Nayan:  In a move to provide long-term solutions to the power crisis in the state, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) signed an MoU with the Rural Electrification Corpo-ration (REC) for setting up two new power projects. The new power projects will generate 1,600 MW at an investment of Rs 7,627 crores with a part funding of Rs 5,612 crores from the REC as loan.

Various agencies to monitor marine pollution

Nayan: Marine scientists are to be deployed along the Indian coastline to monitor pollution on a real time basis and help identify areas that are vulnerable to disasters and erosion. Various agencies like the Space Application Centre (SAC), National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Service (INCOIS) and Centre For Advanced Study in Marine Biology (CASMB) have come together for this initiative. The data provided by the country's remote sensing and communication satellites and geographical information system (GIS) will be used for effective management of coastal resources.

Will Rajnikanth join in BJP?

Nayan: The BJP  made an appeal to Tamil film actor Rajinikanth to accede to his fans' wishes to enter politics as he enjoys goodwill of the people in the state.  "It is appropriate time for Rajinikanth to start his party since he had already earned goodwill from the people of Tamil Nadu,"  S. Thirunav-ukkarasar, BJP national secretary told reporters here at his party's state headquarters.

Anna University plans online education

Nayan: The Anna University, Chennai, is planning to send question papers to exam centres online to avoid tampering with the question papers and other malpractices, said vice chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar. "All the Engineering colleges will be asked to make arrangements for receiving the question papers and take adequate printouts for distribution. The university will transmit the question papers a few hours before the commencement of the exam. The colleges can immediately receive and print them out for the students," he said.

Lankan issue is humanitarian problem: Thangkabalu

Nayan: Taking strong exception to the one-day hunger strike observed by the CPI condemning the UPA's handling of the Lankan ethnic crisis, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K.V. Thangkabalu asked the Left not to politicise the Lankan issue which should be seen as a humanitarian problem.  Driving home the point that Congress had been doing plenty for Lankan Tamils since the days of Nehru till now, the TNCC chief told media persons that demonstrations and hunger strikes would do no good and he was ready to lead an all-party delegation to meet the Prime Minister in connection with the issue.

Terrorism is not a question of one individual-PM

Asked about the removal of Home Minister regarding his handling of terrorism, PM today said there are problems in the system to counter terrorism and "it is not a question of one individual".  "I think we are dealing with a difficult situation. It is not a question of one individual, it is a question of the system and we have problems. We need to improve our various mechanisms which are in place to counter terrorism," he said. He also said that the government will put its "best foot forward" while dealing with terrorism and left wing extremismas it constituted a "serious threat" to the country's unity.
