SSA launched Ariviyal Kondattam van

Nayan: In an effort to take science education to a larger section of students in rural areas in Tamil Nadu, the directorate of elementary education and the state Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) are jointly launching mobile science laboratory van Ariviyal Kondattam (celebrating science). Mr M.P. Vijayakumar, state project director, SSA and director of elementary education, said, We found that imparting science subjects to elementary school children (classes 6,7 and 8) with the conventional blackboard teaching was difficult, as the teacher needs to explain the science subjects without having proper apparatus.
Blind washerwoman gets help hand
Nayan: The blind family of washerwoman Parameswari of Pennagar village near Gingee has got relief, at last. Villupuram collector Brajendra Navnit got his officials to visit the hapless family and announce monthly pensions, subsidised rice and perhaps a cow and a piece of land in course of time. Only the 35-year-old Parameswari has normal eyesight in the family, while her husband Chandran (50), three daughters aged between 16 and 20 and a son aged 19, are all born-blind. With none coming forward to accept a blind man as groom, his sister gave her daughter Parameswari as wife to Chandran.
Model schools in Chennai
Nayan: The corporation for the first time has constructed a state-of-the-art classroom for children to improve the learning atmosphere of the primary and middle schools. A model classroom constructed at a corporation middle school in Purasawalkam at a cost of about Rs 4.5 lakh is all set to be opened.
DMK councillors walks out
Nayan: The rift between the ruling DMK and Congress councillors was visible during the Tambaram municipal council meeting on Thursday. The DMK councillors walked out of the council alleging that several major works were pending in Tambaram due to callousness of chairman, who belongs to the Congress.
Nuclear fuel is shortage
Nayan: For the first time, a top executive of the nuclear power establishment has urged early conclusion of the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal to help ease the acute shortage of uranium fuel, which is causing a steep drop in nuclear power production to less than 50 per cent of capacity. The reactors which are in operation stream function at 48 per cent efficiency due to lack of the uranium fuel. Due to a host of reasons, we are facing a severe shortage, said Dr Shreyans Kumar Jain, chairman and managing director, Nuclear Power Corporation of India.

Nayan: As AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa supported the Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Association's (TNGEA) opposition to the state government's move to bring 15 lakh employees under a health insurance scheme of a MNC, the government maintained that it is a better scheme than the earlier one. It gives a package of Rs 2 lakh every four years unlike the earlier scheme of the government which promised just Rs1 lakh in the entire life-time of an employee, Mr M. Kalaivanan, director of state treasury and accounts, told media.....
Universities to conduct exams for staff
Nayan: In order to enhance unskilled labours into skilled ones by training them, minister for higher education Dr Ponmudi said that the universities in the state will conduct examinations and provide diplomas to them. Interacting with the representatives of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and vice-chancellors of the state universities at the state secretariat, Dr Ponmudi cited the example of an auto major in the outskirts of the city, which was imparting technical training to its unskilled labour, thereby providing them with an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge and skills.
Karunanidhi returned to work
Nayan: After returning from hospital, where he underwent traction and physiotherapy for pain in the neck and back, chief minister M. Karunanidhi quickly returned to work and got busy with official and party chores, besides of course handling the family pressures. The court acquittal of elder son M.K. Azhagiri in the Kiruttinan murder case came as a big relief but then, it appears that the joy was pretty much short-lived as all sorts of pressures built up on the octogenarian. One such heartache came from PMK founder Dr S. Ramadoss, who renewed his demand for total prohibition in Tamil Nadu, pointing to the hooch deaths in Krishnagiri villages. And then, the allies forced him to reverse an important decision he had taken to privatise sand quarrying.
Snow Ball fest launched by TTDC
Nayan: The Snow Ball – summer fest, a maiden initiative by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) to entertain Chennaiites seemed to have virtually chilled the crowd and brought unexpected funds flow into the organisers' kitty. The event launched by Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation at Island Grounds here on May 1 on a revenue sharing experiment with Spellbound to entertain the public seemed to have paid the dividends.

Nayan: The Madras high court has set aside an order of a single judge, approving a compromise scheme arrived at by M/s Integrated Finance Company Limited, to repay its depositors. A division bench comprising Justice P K Misra and Justice S Tamilvanan set aside an order of a single judge, while allowing the appeals filed by Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Integrated Finance Company Depositors Association (IFCDA) and two others.
Karuna to be a weak CM: Jayalalithaa
Nayan: AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa called the government's decision to backtrack its announcement on privatisation of sand quarrying as a "big victory for AIADMK." "All-party meetings are meant for discussing changes in the existing programmes of the state government. But it is ridiculous that the chief minister has convened the meeting just to continue with the earlier system of PWD taking care of sand quarrying," said Ms Jayalalithaa in a statement. AIADMK chief said, "Mr Karunanidhi appears to be a weak chief minister as he is making announcements under pressure from some quarters and withdrawing it after opposition from the people and political parties." "The weakness of the chief minister and his decisions are affecting the interests and rights of the Tamil people. It is high time that he quit as the chief minister of the state," she concluded.
Chennai and Traffic Sense
Nayan: The police are taking the violations of automatic traffic signals during nights in the arterial junctions seriously after it found the majority of motorists refusing to observe signals. And those who stick to rules face the ire of disobedient road-users at many junctions. When the police decided to keep the traffic signals on at night, it wanted to ensure the safety of increased number of road users. Though the number is less when compared to daytime users, the police had found that accidents in night were comparatively more. A major increase in vehicle movement was noticed mainly at the Madhya Kailash intersection because of people working in offices located at the IT corridor. Hundreds of hired cars, private vehicles, taxis zoom down the IT corridor during night transporting thousands of employees.
Power shortage known in 2004: NPCIL

Nayan: NPCIL has taken strong exception to the reported statement by S Machendranathan, chairman, TNSEB that the present power shortage in the state was due to the failure to commission the Kudankulam nuclear power stations on time. "This is not correct. The delay in commissioning the Kudankulam nuclear power stations is not a new development. It was known in 2004 itself that the project would get delayed because of the non-receipt of certain components from Russia," said a spokesman of the NPCIL.
ICSE Results: Waseem topper with 95%
Nayan: Waseem Sheriff is happy student having topped his school in the class XII examinations in the science stream with a winning 96 percentage. A student of the Shishya School in Adyar, Waseem along with his classmate Leeza Matthew emerged with the highest percentage in his school after the ICSE board results were announced. Scoring full marks in Computer Science and 99 in Mathematics, the boy owes his success to the support of his parents and excellent coaching of his teachers.
Tension grips at Kasimedu harbour
Nayan: Tension gripped Kasimedu fishing harbour following an eviction drive by authorities to facilitate construction of an auction platform. Protests by fishermen and social activists turned violent after the police used force on them. The trouble started when fishing harbour officials started removing catamaran and boats to nearby locations despite objection from the fishermen and their families. The objection was mainly from the fishermen having catamarans in the area.

Nayan: The growth of a country depends on quality education and hygiene, the existing demand for the college seats are artificial and this trend has to be changed," said Mr G. Viswanathan chancellor, Vellore Institute of Technology. Addressing a joint certificate programme on effective solid waste management held here on Friday, Mr Viswanathan said that all the youth in the country should have access to higher education. Education should be a sector, which is free from castes and reservation, every youth irrespective of caste and religion, should have access to quality education. The government and private institutions should join hands in promoting the education system and the hygiene, said the chancellor of VIT.
War of words continues: DMK Vs PMK
Nayan: The war of words continues between the ruling DMK and its mercurial ally the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) with the latter hitting back at chief minister M. Karunanidhi, refuting his allegations of betrayal by friends, saying the essence of alliance lay in pinpointing mistakes. "If you want us to stay away from pointing out your mistakes or say that we did not have the right to do it being a friendly party, neither would we accept that nor would the people accept it," PMK founder Dr S. Nayan: The results of the Plus Two examinations held in March will be announced today. About 5,87, 245 students took the test in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. As many as 2,78,673 boys and 3,08,572 girls appeared for the examinations. The number has shot up by 30,000 compared to last year as students from 810 schools wrote the exams in over 1,000 exam venues. Over 50,000 teachers have been involved in evaluating the candidates. B.Ed colleges issue: HC vacated the stay
Nayan: Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar of the Madras high court has vacated the stay on a resolution of the syndicate of Thiruvalluvar University permitting eight private colleges to start a new B.Ed college, M.Ed course and additional intake in B.Ed courses. The court had on April 1 granted the stay on a petition filed by Prof. I. Elangovan, head of department of English, Voorhese College, Vellore, challenging the resolution. Justice Paul Vasanthakumar said the contention of the institutions was that after recognition was granted by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) they obtained affiliation from Thiruvalluvar university in November, 2007, and admitted students for the B.Ed and M.Ed courses.
Rs.20 lakh worth gold stolen in Chennai
Nayan: A gang of burglars broke into a pawnshop at Kolapakkam, near suburban Tambaram, in the early hours and got away with gold and silver worth over Rs 20 lakh. The gang reportedly broke at least six locks to get access to a 650-kg safety locker in which the valuables were kept. The burglars carried the locker to an isolated area before opening it, the police said.

Nayan: Gulf countries are the most preferred foreign destination for Chennaiites, according to statistics from the airport customs. During the year ended on March 31, 4,80,597 passengers flew to Gulf countries. A total of 17,79,990 people flew to foreign countries from Chennai in the last financial year. While 27 per cent went to the Gulf, 18 per cent landed in Colombo. Other most preferred destinations were Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The total departures to Singapore were 3,20,398 and 2,22,498 to Kuala Lumpur. Another 6.3 per cent departures were to Frankfurt and the rest 18.2 per cent flew to different countries," said a senior official.
Prakash Karat visits Madurai
Nayan: The CPM general secretary, Mr Prakash Karat, visited Uthapuram village near Usilampatti in Madurai, where a section of the controversial 'wall of untouchability' was demolished by the district administration on Tuesday, conceding to the demand of the communist party.Mr Karat arrived at the village at around 10 a.m. and was shown the wall and the section, which was demolished. The entire village was under a security blanket with police personnel stationed every three feet. The homes of the residents who had been living on the non-dalit section of the wall remained locked for the second consecutive day as the residents had left their homes with bag and baggage and cattle to live in the foothills nearby. They said that they would only return if the wall was reconstructed. The CPM general secretary addressed a large gathering of dalits, including women and children, who welcomed him by raising their hands in a salute.

Nayan: The crowd of distraught victims of the Goldquest and other multi-level marketing (MLM) scams thronging the office of the Chennai police commissioner has swollen to such proportions that some smart 'entrepreneurs' have opened stalls selling ready-to-fill forms for filling out all those pathetic petitions. Each form was priced at one rupee when these 'mobile kiosks' opened Tuesday morning but by the evening, the demand was so huge that the hawkers hiked the cost 10 times.

Nayan: The DMDK chief Vijayakanth's march towards national parties continues. After meeting the CPM general secretary Prakash Karat in Delhi, he the met NCP president Sharad Pawar and Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday. The actor-politician's readiness to have an alliance with a national party became clear when he reportedly had an on board discussion with Mr V.Arun Kumar, the then Congress MP in-charge of Tamil Nadu few months ago.
