TN to help Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy patients

Nayan: Tamil Nadu government has become the first in the country to lend a helping hand to those affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a muscular disorder that affects male children. Social welfare minister Poongothai, a doctor by profession, announced in the Assembly that those suffering from DMD would be given a monthly assistance of Rs 500. DMD is a form of genetic disorder that is characterized by decreasing muscle mass and progressive loss of muscle function in male children. Symptoms ussually appear in male children before age six. Progressive muscle weakness of the legs and pelvis associated with a loss of muscle mass is observed and spreads to the arms, neck, and other areas leading to complete paralysis. The condition is terminal and death usually occurs before the age of 30.

Titanium dioxide project: Tata's in problem

Nayan: Offices of Tata's ambitious but controversial Rs. 2,500 crore titanium dioxide project in Tirunelveli and Sattankulam have been closed down after the company's attempt to acquire 10,000 acres of land land failed miserably in the last nine months. The company had managed to get its hand on only 25 acres of land.  Tata Steel had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu Government to revive its proposal to set up a titanium dioxide project in Tuticorin in June 2007 after its earlier  MoU  in 2002 for setting up the project failed to take off.

Leopard trapped by wildlife officials

Nayan: A female leopard, trapped by the wildlife department following reports that the animal had mauled a five-year-old girl in Valparai near Coimbatore recently, was brought to Arignar Anna Zoologoical Park. According to the zoo officials the one-and-a-half-year old panther started its journey from Valparai Wednesday and reached the zoo on Thursday around 11 am. The animal was in a state of stress and would be kept in a quarantine enclosure for a few weeks.

HC dismisses Sasikala plea

Nayan: The Madras high court dismissed an appeal filed by V. K. Sasikala, a close friend of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, against an order of a single judge who held that there was no bar for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to pursue the proceedings initiated against her under Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) even after the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) came into force.

Coimbatore - Chennai Express derails

Nayan: The engine of the Coimbatore-Chennai Intercity express derailed in the early hours of Thursday. The train was delayed by four hours inconveniencing passengers waiting at the crowded platform. The shunting of the engine started at 5.30 a.m. to get the bogies to the platform, as the scheduled departure of the intercity express was at 6.30 a.m.

AIADMK to attact youngsters

Nayan: Youngsters are not against politics. The ongoing recruitment drive for the newly-formed young women and young men wings (pasarais) of AIADMK for the last two months is an indicator. The popular notion that the average young Indian is averse or indifferent to politics is disproved by the enthusiasm witnessed in both the urban and rural centers during this drive.

IT SEZ at Hosur: Karuna

Nayan: Chief minister M. Karunanidhi announced in the House that the government has initiated steps to set up an Information Technology Special Economic Zone (IT SEZ) at Hosur, in Krishnagiri district, and also that foundation stone for an IT park would be laid at Madurai. Replying to the queries, Mr Karunanidhi said that the Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) had acquired 172.19 acres of land at the Viswanathapuram village for the IT SEZ and the Centre's approval has been obtained for the same.

Southern Railway to introduce GPS

Nayan: In a bid to become more passenger-friendly, the Southern railway has planned to introduce Global Positioning System (GPS) in all suburban trains. The trains will be fitted with a transmitter and receiver. The GPS will ensure that the announcements of the arrival and departure of trains is precise. The pilot project has been implemented in five rakes.

UG Exams: Students upset

Nayan: Undergraduate students from various colleges in Chennai have complained that there was a lot of confusion during the conduct of the exams for the past two days. They complained that the students' personalised answer sheets, introduced by the university recently, got swapped with that of the other colleges and they did not have correct details on the answer sheets. This incident has brought to light the issue of lack of student representatives in the University's Syndicate and Senate.

Nayan: The Madras high court  reserved orders on a petition filed by AIADMK leader and former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu Government to provide Z Plus category security to her. Justice M. Jaichandran who reserved orders after hearing elaborate arguments from both sides, directed both the counsel to file written submissions if any by April 21.

Summer camps starts in Chennai

Nayan: Chennai corporation is palnning to conduct a summer swimming camp at the Marina swimming pool from Wednesday. A press release said that the first batch would start at 6 am and end by 7 am. The second batch would start by 7 am and end by 8 am on all days.

Chennai - a slum free city

Nayan: Chennai will be made a slum-free city by 2013 and necessary measures will be initiated to create an integrated township at a cost of Rs 814.85 crore. Benefiting over one lakh persons, the township will contain schools, parks and other facilities, state revenue and housing minister I. Periasami informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

Congress unit infighting comes to fore

Nayan: The divide in the faction-ridden Tamil Nadu Congress is widening with the influential Vasan camp observing a fast in Coimbatore on Tuesday in protest against the removal of the three district presidents loyal to Union minister G.K.Vasan. Two party workers tried to self-immolate as part of the protest. Kovai Thangam (Valpaarai legislator), P.V.Mani and Kuniyamuthur Arumugam, Coimbatore Urban, North and South district presidents respectively were removed from their posts on April 10. The three revenue districts of the party were classified into two districts – urban and rural – and two new presidents A.R.Chinnayan and V.C.Manoharan, both supporters of Nilgiris MP R.Prabhu, were nominated by the high command. Mr Ganesan replaced Gopal (both Prabhu's supporters) as Nilgris president.

DMK party cadres clash

Nayan: Twelve persons including two policemen were injured when two groups of DMK party cadres clashed in Ooty on Sunday.  The clash broke out when the verbal duel between the associates of the former whip Mubarak and the Khadi Board minister K. Ramachandran worsened to a scuffle during the filing of nominations for the organisation elections in Ooty.   The nominations were to be filed at eight panchayat unions and four municipalities in Nilgiris district. 

Paliyars: Fighting for community certificates

Nayan: Paliyars, who are considered by anthropologists as more than 100-year old original inhabitants of Palani hills, one of the six abodes Lord Murugan, don't exist in the official records. Nearly 200 Paliyars in Kumbaraiyoor village near Kodaikanal have been fighting a long and arduous battle to get community certificates which will enable the education of their children. The village remains zero per cent literate.  Despite an anthropologist from Madras University visiting them and certifying that they are one of the more than 100-year old indigenous tribes of the Palani hills, their wait for shelters and community certificates continues.

Ketamine seized at Chennai

Nayan: A significant amount of the party drug - ketamine, worth Rs 1.35 crore in the international market was seized from two Kuala Lumpur-bound passengers at the Chennai airport on Wednesday morning.  According to sources, the two passengers were found smuggling ketamine powder along with milk powder, semiya and appalam to the Malaysian capital.

Chennai airport modernisation ready before 2010

Nayan: While the modernisation of Chennai airport would be completed by 2010, the state government is also examining the option of establishing a greenfield airport at Sriperumbudur, transport minister K.N. Nehru said on Wednesday. Tabling the policy note of his department, Mr Nehru said with the Chennai airport recording a significant growth in both passenger traffic and cargo movement as the city had transformed into a hub for foreign direct investment in various industrial sectors, the government had decided to modernize and expand it in coordination with the Centre.

VIT offers free education for 12 toppers

Nayan: The VIT University would provide free education to class 12 toppers from all states in the country from the coming academic year. University chancellor G. Viswanathan on Wednesday announced that this initiative would help needy and deserving students in various parts of the country get world class education at no cost. Delivering his presidential address during the university day celebrations, Mr Viswanathan, said that the university would also provide free education, board and lodging facilities for deserving students from the rural parts of north Tamil Nadu. Lamenting that the quality of school education in the state was not on par with national standards, Mr Viswanathan said that it was high time that the Centre and state allot more funds and strengthen school education to help students enter premier institutions like the Indian Institute of technologies.

New fares in TNSTC buses: Nehru

Nayan: The mofussil services offered by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation will henceforth have only three types of fare structure: ordinary (28 paise per km), express (32 paise per km) and A\C (85 paise per km) Making an announcement in the Assembly in this regard on Wednesday, state transport minister K.N. Nehru said the fare structure for deluxe and super deluxe bus services would stand cancelled. With 28 paise per km for ordinary mofussil service, 32 paise per km for deluxe and 38 paise for super deluxe, the fare per km in Tamil Nadu had been the lowest in the country and had not been revised since December, 2001, though diesel and establishment cost had increased substantially, Mr Nehru said.

TNSTC paid arrears of Rs.1 crore

Nayan: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority's audit for 2006-07 has revealed that the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Villupuram) and State Express Transport Corporation have not paid their arrears of Rs 1.07 crore for the maintenance shed and fuel station that they have in the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), maintained by CMDA.

Nayan: Students of corporation and government schools in Chennai get an exposure to the best of science and technology, thanks to the government of Tamil Nadu through Science City. Every month, about 250 students will be given a three-day orientation programme in science and technology at Science City by a select group of scientists and teachers and that too in earthy Tamil. 

Online bookings flooded for US, UK and Australia

Nayan: The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation is flooded with online bookings from several countries including the US, UK, Australia, facilitating the corporation to mop up a revenue of Rs.1.02 crore up to March this year. Encouraged by this, the authorities propose to develop a virtual tours covering many important destinations in Tamil Nadu to attract more tourists including foreign nationals to the state. "We have received bookings from more than 70 nationals, including Spain, France, Finland, Canada, Norway, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, China and other Asian countries, and earned a net revenue of Rs.233.97 lakh since the fiscal 2004-05," a senior official said. During 2006-07, the corporation earned a revenue of Rs.84.38 lakh.
