Rs 550cr for Chennai Metro Rail

The Tamil Nadu government has set aside Rs 550cr towards the first phase for the construction of the Chennai Metro Rail Project. The project is also being allocated a Rs 13 crore fund from the Center overnment.
The initial phase would comprise of two corridors with a total length of 45 km which is likely to begin operation in 5 years. Corridor 1 will conenct Washermanpet to Airport via Anna Salai while Corridor 2 will connect Chennai Central with St Thomas Mount via Koyambedu.
The total project cost is estimated at Rs 14,600 crore, 59 percent of which will be funded through loan by the government of Japan. --MP
